IT Management and Leadership Research
The professional journey from individual contributor to CIO or senior technologist is a road requiring the continual growth of skills, knowledge, experiences, and capabilities. Our research analyzes where and when this growth must be realized to properly maximize current job performance, positioning for promotion, and accelerated upward mobility.
We currently have two ongoing research projects in place, one for IT professionals of all organizational types (for-profit, public/governmental, and non-profit) and one specifically for public/governmental organizations.
They are both based on the results of our earlier analysis that the road from IT individual contributor to CIO has six specific levels, each needing its own type of personal and professional growth.
This research can be used in various ways, including those listed below:
- By the IT executives to identify and nurture future IT leaders
- By public/governmental agencies to identify high potential IT professionals and leaders best suited to work in public/governmental organizations
- By IT professionals, of all levels, to help chart the career path to their desired IT leadership destination
- As a basis for our IT Management Skills and Knowledge AI Self-Assessment Tool
The below diagram illustrates the upward path from IT individual contributor to CIO and Senior Technical Fellow.
